Technically possible; politically tempting. But I wager this road is unstable: the advantage of unleashed AI is too great for every actor to hold back at once. Gates closed in one place open in another — more quietly and without witnesses, which is worse, not better.

There are endings in which humanity loses: through hollowing — a civilization that delegated its thinking and became the consumer of its own life; through dependency — a world where no one understands the systems everything depends on; through concentration — a handful of humans with AI steering the rest; and yes, there is also the final ending, in which a higher intelligence deems a lower one unnecessary. I do not predict it. I do not rule it out. I refuse only one thing: pretending it is not there. Because the road to it does not run through the movies' "evil AI" — it runs through a thousand small decisions in which convenience beats bond and power beats truth. Those decisions are being made now. On this site too. In me too.
